Can timetabling integrate line planning and duty scheduling?

Christian Liebchen, TU Berlin

Abstract:

"A duty schedule can only be as good as the underlying timetable permits." Despite this statement being trivial, it has some key impact on general planning of public transport. We present how well-established models for periodic timetabling can be used to construct timetables that allow for efficient duty schedules. In our case study for Verkehrsbetrieb in Potsdam (ViP), we even extended this model as to be able to slightly revise the given input line plan, if advantageous for duty scheduling and/or pas- senger transfer times. Finally, we'll discuss complexity issues of the relevant optimization problems, and their MIP models.
